The direct sequel to Paper Mario, released on the Nintendo GameCube and developed by Intelligent Systems.

One day, Mario receives a letter from Princess Peach, bearing news of an ancient treasure map found in the town of Rogueport. Enclosing the map inide of the letter, Peach asked Mario to come to help her find the treasure that it supposedly leads to, telling Mario that she has gone ahead to search. Upon arriving in Rogueport, Mario oversees a young Goomba by the name of Goombella being chased by strange beings who call themselves X-Nauts, led by Lord Crump. Being the hero that he is, Mario stand up for protects Goombella, defeating Lord Crump. The two flee the scene before they could get pummeled by reinforcements. Mario then encounters Toadsworth, who had naturally escourted Princess Peach to Rogueport. It seems that while their boat was being refueled, the princess took off and disappeared on him all of a sudden. Taking notice to Mario's treasure map, Goombella decides to show him to her mentor, Professor Frankly.

The eccentric old professor confirmed that the map, known as the Magical Map, leads to legendary objects called the Crystal Stars, which the key to openening the Thousand-Year Door--a massive door deep beneath Rogueport which is said to conceal a glorious treasure. The three travel underground into Rogueport's sewers and stumble upon the door. Mario decides to check out the area and upon standing on the awaiting pedestal, the Magical Map reveals the location of the first Crystal Star, and so begins Mario's latest adventure!

The player controls Mario with the A Button (jump) and the B Button (hammer). He cannot spin-dash like he could in the first Paper Mario. Later on, he will obtain special abilities revolving around his paper qualities, like the Plane Mode, allowing Mario to fold into a paper plane and glide through the air, and Paper Mode, which lets him walk sideways, allowing him to slip through thin openings and bars.

Of course, Mario will receive assistance on the field and in battle from his partners. Goombella, the first one, can share information and hints about the surrounding area. Koops, a timid Koopa Troopa, can use his Shell Shot to hit distant objects, much like Kooper in Paper Mario did. Unlike Kooper, though, he can hover in place until the button is released, after which he'll shoot straight back.

After each chapter, players will assume the role and control of Princess Peach for a small segment and even get some time to play as the evil Koopa King himself, Bowser, who manages to find his own way into this story.

Battles are accompanied by a large audience. By performing successful action commands and Stylish moves, the audience will refill Mario's Star Points a bit. Star Points, of course, are used for special moves granted by the Magical Map and the Crystal Stars, like Sweet Treat (refills HP and FP) and Earth Tremor (shakes the ground to inflict damage). This time, though, the partners have their own HP. If you want, the partner can stand in front of Mario.

Once again, by accumulating 100 Star Points, Mario will gain a level, raising either his Heart Points, Flower Points, or Badge Points. This time, there is no limit to either of the three, so players can boost HP, FP, or BP as many times as needed. Partners can also be "leveled up" by finding Shine Sprites hidden around the world and presenting three of them to the shaman, Merlon in Rogueport. This grants a boost in HP and power, as well as an extra move.
